Thomas Walster was born in 1884 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a drover and cattle dealer. In the 1911 census Thomas Walster is living at 2 Cawkwell Court, Cawkwell Yard, Stodman Street, Newark, he is shown as being 27 yrs of age, single and a boatman for the Trent Navigation Company, he states he has had no children he is living with Kate Ward 21 yrs and single and is a servant, housekeeper she states she has had 2 children, and also Thomas Walster 7 months of age a son. In the same 1911 census we find living next door at 3 Cawkwell Court Thomas's father Joseph who is shown as being 59 yrs and single and a drover and cattle dealer, he is living with Jane Martin 53 yrs married and described as a house keeper. His father states he has had 5 children, 2 of whom had died.
Lance Corporal Thomas Walster enlisted on 15th August 1901 at Newark and served with the 2nd battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. On completion of his time in the Army he returned to Newark. When war broke out he was called up as a reservist at Derby and served with the 4th battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 28th October, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. panel 6
Article published 9th December 1914 in the Newark Advertiser :- Joined the 2nd Royal Scottish Fusiliers (mounted infantry) at Derby in 1901, when he was eighteen-and-a-half years old. He spent some time in India and was a total abstainer from March 1907 to 1909. A well known boxer while in the army. After completing his service and returning to Newark, he was the star turn at many boxing contests at the Imperial Hall. When war broke out was called up as a reservist and went out with the expeditionary force.
