Frank Walster was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of Robert a general labourer and Ann Walster née Jones of 5 Depot Yard, Kirkgate, Newark. His father Robert was born in 1847 at Newark and his mother Ann Jones was born in 1855 at Beckingham, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1873 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Alice b1876, Elizabeth b1881, Sarah b1884, Albina b1887, John Robert b1890, Frank b1892 and Richard Henry b1895 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Depot Yard, Newark and are shown as Robert 64 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Ann 56 yrs and their children, Albina 24 yrs a dress maker, Frank 19 yrs a labourer and Richard Henry 16 yrs a maltster
Private Frank Walster enlisted at Newark on 7th September 1914, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 9 months, he gave his address as 5 Depot Yard, Kirkgate, Newark, he stated he was a foundry moulder and worked for W.N.Nicholson and Son Ltd, his next of kin was his father Robert of the same address. He was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was killed in action on 30th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Article published in the Newark Herald on 14th August 1915 :- Eldest son of Robert & Ann Walster, 5 Depot Yard, Kirkgate, Newark. Educated at Lovers’ Lane Council School and afterwards employed at Messrs. W.N. Nicholson and Sons’ ironworks, during which time he joined the local Territorials, 8th Sherwood Foresters. Fatally bayoneted while on patrol duty. News first received in a letter to Mrs Joynes, in a letter from her son. Frank’s brother, Dick (R.H.) is also serving.
