He was the son of Elijah and Elizabeth Ann Wakefield and the brother of John Christopher, Gertrude Eva, Annie Elizabeth, Ernest Leonard and Frances Eliza Wakefield. In 1911 they lived at 13 Hollis Road New Basford Nottingham. He married Lily Wright in 1915.
