He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Thacker. He was the nephew of George and Jane Wright and the brother of Walter Thacker. In 1901 they lived at 28 Harcourt Street, in 1911 at 82 Bowbridge Road and later 10 Cross Street (all Newark Nottinghamshire).
Private William Wright Thacker enlisted in September 1914 in Newark, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 14th July 1915 and was killed in action on 24th March 1917. He is buried in Philosophe British Cemetery Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais France.
According to CWGC William was the 'adopted son of Mrs P. Wright of 16 Whitfield Street Newark'. William and his brother Walter were 'nephews' in 1901 and 'boarders' in 1911. William's adoption was probably informal assuming that Jane and Mrs P Wright were the same woman. David Nunn Article published 11th April 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Adopted son of Mrs P. Wright, 16 Whitfield Street, Newark. Prior to the war he worked for Mr Jos. Wright, builder, Whitfield Street, deceased having made his home with them for some time. Attended the Wesleyan Day School and enlisted in the Notts. & Derbyshire Regiment in September 1914. Sent to France in March 1915 and Killed in action
