William Statham

William was the son of James Statham and Emma Statham (née Marshall). James, a basket maker, was born in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, and Emma in East Leake, Nottinghamshire; both were born in about 1865. They were married in 1885 (O/N/D Loughborough), a few months after the birth of their first child, Constance Ethel (Marshall). They had six children; Constance Ethel b. 1885 (A/M/J Loughborough), Stella b. 14 March 1887 (1887 A/M/J Loughborough), William b. 11 June 1889, James b. 6 September 1891 (1891 O/N/D Loughborough), Emma birth registered 1894 J/F/M Loughborough, and Ann b. 1897 (A/M/J Loughborough). All the children were born in East Leake. In 1891 James (26) and Emma (27) were living on Loughborough Road, East Leake, with their three children Constance (5), Stella (4) and William (1). Also in the household was a lodger, William Howitt (57), a widower, who like James was a basket maker. James and Emma, who was now working from home as a seamer of hosiery, were still living on Loughborough Road in 1901. Four of their five children were in the household on the night of the census: Constance (15), William (11), James (9) and Emma (4). The youngest child, Ann, was born six years later in 1897. The eldest child, Constance, married Thomas Pierrepoint in 1904 (O/N/D Loughborough) and the second daughter, Stella, married Samuel Haines in 1906 (A/M/J Loughborough). Constance (25) and Thomas Pierrepoint (26) b. East Leake, a plaster miner (gypsum mine), were living on Pecks Row, East Leake, in 1911. They had four children; Joseph (6), James (4), Thomas (2) and Daisy (3 m.). Her sister, Stella Haines and her husband, Samuel (29) b. East Leake, a railway platelayer, were living on Main Street, East Leake. They had three daughters, Annie (5), Elsie (3) and Stella (6 m.). James Statham and Emma were also still living in East Leake in 1911 along with their four unmarried children, William (21), a basket maker like his father, James (19) a bricklayer's labourer, Emma (17) and Ann (14). William's brother, James, married Maude E Lovell (?Lovett) in 1912 (J/A/S Loughborough), and William himself married Rose Chambers in 1915 (A/M/J Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire). His widow, Rose, was living at Standard Hill, Coalville, Leicestershire, when William was killed in 1917. William's two sisters Emma and Ann also married; Emma to John T Gunn in 1918 (J/A/S Loughborough) and Ann to William C Hardy in 1919 (J/A/S Loughborough). William's father also served in the war. He attested on 17 December 1914 at the age of 49 (20139, later 4239, Private, Royal Defence Corps). He was promoted lance corporal on 30 January 1915 and acting corporal in January 1916. He was reverted Private on 16 March 1916 (deprived of lance stripe for disobedience of orders) and transferred on 29 April 1916 to the 2/7th Notts and Derbys Regiment (RDC). He was demobilized on 7 March 1919 to 29 Burdett Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, having served for four years and 81 days. James died aged 79 in 1944 (Sep Loughborough) and his widow, Emma aged 86 in 1951 (Mar Loughborough). Constance Pierrepoint probably died in 1952 (Mar Basford) at the age of 66, James in 1979 (Mar Loughborough) at the age of 87, and Stella Haines in 1985 (Feb Loughborough) at the age of 97.
