Charles William (junior ) was a born in 1885 at Newark and was the son of Charles William Statham (senior) a cabinet maker and the late Hannah Statham née Hurt of 20,Whitfield St, Newark His father Charles William (senior) was born in 1856 at Newark and his mother Hannah Mary Hurt was born in 1859 at Collingham, she died in 1910 aged 52 yrs, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Edith Mary b1883, Charles William b1885, Annie b1886 and George Henry b1890 all were born in Newark. Charles William Statham (junior) married his wife Nellie Baxter (born 1889 Spalding) on 12th April 1909 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, Edna May born 28th May 1910, Doris Annie born 21st March 1912 and Charles William born 7th May 1916, they lived at 34 Harcourt Street Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 28 Harcourt Street, Newark and are shown as Charles William Statham 26 yrs a postman, he is living with his wife Nellie 22 yrs and their daughter Edna May 10 months of age In the same census his father and siblings are living at 15 Sleaford Road, Newark and are shown as Charles William 55 yrs a widow and piano remover, he is living with his children, Annie 25 yrs a housekeeper and George Henry 20 yrs an iron moulder. Charles William Statham (junior) his probate was proven (with will) on 9th April 1918 at Nottingham and shows him as Charles William Statham of 34 Harcourt Street, Newark Private in H.M. Army died 29th June 1917 in France, his effects of £237 6 shillings and 8 pence were left to Nellie Statham, a widow.
Private Charles William Statham attested on 10th December 1915 at Newark, he stated he was 31 yrs and 97 days old, he lived at 34 Harcourt Street, Newark, he was a postman and his next of kin was his wife Nellie of the same address, he gave his religion as that of Church of England, the following day he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 15th June 1916, reporting the following day the Derby depot, , he was posted on 20th June 1916 to the North Staffordshire regiment with the service number 6361. He embarked from Folkstone on 26th September 1916 arriving the same day in Boulogne and joined his unit in the field. On 13th October he was transferred to the 14th battalion York's and Lancashire Regiment and allocated the service number 31515. On 29th June 1917 he was killed in action, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
His brother George Henry Statham enlisted on 14th October 1914 at Newark, he was 24 yrs and 185 days he was an iron moulder, he served with the service number 17853 with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and landed in France on 14th July 1915, he was later transferred tot he Labour Corps and on 4th March 1918 was discharged from the Army as being no longer fit for service, he was awardee as silver war badge number 336410. Article published 8th August 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Charles W. Statham, 20 Whitfield Street, Newark. Resided with wife, Nellie Statham and three young children at 34 Harcourt Street, Newark. He attended the Mount School and afterwards entered the Post Office as a telegraph lad. Later becoming a town postman and was identified with the department for 18 years. He was a footballer of some repute and figured in the Newark Town team in the Midland League days, while he was also playing in the Newark Reserves. Had also assisted Newark Albion and the Post Office teams. Had been out at the front for the past 11 months and reported missing on June 28th. His unit gained objectives with slight casualties, but when formed up in sections, he could not be found. Listed on the Newark Post Office memorial
