George was the only son of Charles Stanley, a maltster, and Sussanah Stanley (née Footit ). His father lived at 36 Beacon Hill, Newark. His parents were married in 1888 in Nottingham. His mother died aged 49 yrs in 1900 in Dover. In 1901 Charles lived and worked at Dover. In 1911, Charles lived as one of ten boarders at the Reindeer Inn, 2 Northgate, Newark with Joseph Trickett and his family. George Footit lived at 36 Bottom Row, Beacon Hill, Newark with Joseph Taylor a railway worker and his wife and young son.
George Footit Stanley attested on 25th August 1914 and was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters . However within 31 days he had been discharged from the army, medically unfit to serve. On 19th February 1916 he again attested at Newark and was posted to the reserves the following day. On 30th March 1916 he was mobilised and joined the 4th Battalion South Staffordshires on 4th April 1916. On 2nd August 1916 he embarked from England to travel to France to join the British Expeditionary Force, where on 2nd September 1916 he was transferred to 21st battalion Manchester Regiment. Article published 17th January 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Only son of Mr Charles Stanley, 36 Beacon Hill, Newark. Attended the Wesleyan School and was later a leading maltster in the employ of Messrs. Gilstrap, Earp and Co. He joined the Manchester Regiment and had been out at the front about six months when killed by shell fire during an attack made on an enemy trench on the morning of January 11th.
