Family History

James Henry Betteridge was born in 1882 the son of Henry a coal miner and Ann Betteridge née Goacher. Henry was born in 1853 in Moria, Leicestershire , Ann Goacher was born in 1857 also in Moria, married in 1876, they had 13 children, 12 surviving infancy - Charles W b1877 Oakthorpe, Leicestershire , Fanny b1879 Hugglestone,Leicestershire, James Henry b1882 Moria, Sarah b1885 Oakthorpe, Maria b1887 Hipstock, Leic, William b1889, Kirkby, Joseph b1891 Kirkby, Harrry b1893 Bulwell, Thomas b1895 Bulwell, Agnes b1899 Hucknall, Reuben b1901 Kirkby, and Ernest George b1905 Kirkby. In the 1911 census the family was living at 4 Victoria Terrace, Nuncargate, Kirkby. James Henry married Florence Housley in 1902. They had two chidren, William Henry and May Betteridge. In 1911 they lived at 25 Fox Street Kirkby in Ashfield.

Military History

Rifleman James Henry Betteridge enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Annesley Woodhouse, he landed in France on 31st July 1915. He was killed in action on 10th April 1917, having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 7

His brother Driver Harry Betteridge enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Kirkby, he died of meningitis on 6th April 1917 at 27th Casualty clearing station at Salonica, he is buried at Lahana Military Cemetery, Salonika: Grave Reference: III B 3
