Frank Smith was born in 1893 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a house painter and Sarah Smith née Else of 17 Chatham Street, Newark. His father Joseph William was born in 1863 at Newark and his mother Sarah Ann was born in 1868 at Barnby, they were married in Newark in 1889 and went on to have 2 children, only one survived, Frank b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Chatham Street, Newark and are shown as Joseph William 48 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 43 yrs and their son Frank 18 yrs a hairdresser, they state they have been married for 21 yrs and have had 2 children, 1 of which have died.
Private Frank Smith attested on 28th January 1916 at Melton Mowbray, he gave his age as 23 yrs and 39 days, his address was 7 Sherrard Street, Melton Mowbray, his next of kin was his father Joseph William of 17 Chatham Street, Newark. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised on 1st March 1916 and posted to the Leicestershire Regiment at their depot at Leicester. He landed in France on 11th August 1916 and was killed in action on 13th April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
