William Clarence Slater was born in 1893 at Newark and was the son of Harry a newsagent and his first wife Mary Eliza Slater née Eggleston of Newark. His father Harry was born in 1869 at Newark and his mother Mary Eliza Eggleston was born in 1867 she died in 1902 at Newark aged 35 yrs, they had the following children, Harry b1890, Clarence b1893 and Ivy b1897. His father re married in 1903 at Newark to Lizzie Gertrude Clark, they went on to have the following children Gertrude Olive Emma b1904, Mary Kathleen b1910 and Ruth Honour b193, all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census his father is living at Elston village, he is shown as being Harry 42 yrs a newsagent, he is living with his second wife Lizzie 30 yrs and their daughter Mary Kathleen 3 months of age. William Clarence Slater in the same 1911 census can be found living at Crownhill barracks, Crownhill, Plympton, Devon , he is 18 yrs of age serving with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment.
Corporal William Clarence Slater enlisted at Newark on 18th July 1910 and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 20th October 1914 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
His father Harry Slater enlisted on 16th September 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 46 yrs and 2 months , his address was Elston Village and he stated he was a bus driver. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He saw no service abroad and on 29th June 1915 appeared before a medical board who found him no longer fir for active service due to lipoma diffuse. On 14th July 1915 he was discharged from the Army under Kings Regulation 392.
