James Scoley was born in 1886 at Doncaster and was the son of William a railway porter and the late Sarah Ann Scoley née Drury of 23 Abbott Street, Doncaster His father Wiliam was born in 1851 at Claypole, he died in 1917 at Doncaster, his mother Sarah Ann Drury was born in 1852 at Winthorpe she died in 1889 at Doncaster she was 36 yrs of age. They married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration area. They went on to have the following children, Sarah b1874 Winthorpe, Mary Charlotte b1874 Winthorpe, Susan b1878 Newark, Eliza b1879 Newark, Clara b1880 Newark, John b1882 Newark and James b1886 at Doncaster. In the 1911 census James Scoley was living along with his widowed father William at 23 Abbott Street, Doncaster, they are both living with Frederick Patrick 36 yrs an engineers pattern maker and his family. William is shown as being 60 yrs of age a widow and a railway porter, James is shown as 25 yrs single and a boiler smith maker labourer James Scoley married his wife Mary Ann Drewery in 1913 at Doncaster.
Private James Scoley enlisted at Pontefract on 10th November 1902 and served with the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd October 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial
Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) is cited on memorials in Newark but no soldier called Scoley served with this regiment during the Great War. James Scoley enlisted with York and Lancaster Regiment 10/11/1902.
