Edward was born on 2nd December 1890 in Newark and was the eldest son of corset manufacturer Richard Scales and his wife Susannah Scales née Buckenham of Norfolk House, London Road, Newark. Richard was born in 1865 in Hornsey Middlesex and Susannah in 1864 in Beccles Suffolk, they were married in 1889 in Wangford Suffolk. They moved to the Newark area sometime before the birth of their first child in 1890 as their four children were all born in Newark and were Edith Marion b1892, Edward Lionel b1890, Edwin Herbert b1896 and Elizabeth Cynthia b1901, they did have a further child but it sadly died in infancy. In the 1911 census the family are living at 62 London Road, Newark, Richard 46 years and a corset manufacturer is living with his wife Susannah 47 years and their children Edith 19 years an art student, Edward 20 years an assistant in his fathers business, Edwin 15 years and Elizabeth 10 years both students.Edward married Dorothy Ada Smart in the 4/4 of 1915 it was registered in the Salford district of Manchester she was living at ""Farley Hill,"" Kersal, Manchester.His probate was proven in London on 13th August 1919 and shows him as Edward Lionel Scales of Norfolk House, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire, died 11th November 1918 at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent , his effects of £316 13 shillings and 8 pence were left to his widow Dorothy Ada Scales. Richard and Susannah must have been very proud of their two sons who both became officers and served for their King and Country throughout the great war, the tragedy of both of them dying within a month of each other so close to the end of the 'Great War' must have devastated the family and while everyone around them would be celebrating Victory on the 11th November 1918 the news this family received must have been crushing.
He joined the Special Reserve of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own Middlesex Regiment in August 1913 He was gazetted on 12TH September 1913 to the rank of Second Lieutenant from 13th September 1913 and was later attached to the King’s African Rifles. After contracting malaria during his service in German East Africa, succumbed to pneumonia at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, on 11th November 1918. He was taken home and buried in Kersal St Pauls churchyard, just outside Manchester grave reference A 1 3 His brother Edwin Herbert died of wounds on 11th October 1918 just a month prior to Edward.
The following is an extract from the Magnus School, Newark diary of the 'Great War' ; - 11 November 1918: By the cruellest of fates, while Newark was wildly celebrating the end of The Great War, Richard and Susannah Scales lost a second son. Like Edwin (his brother) , Captain Edward Lionel Scales, born December 1890, had been educated at the Magnus. He then acted as clerk to the Vicar of Christ Church, Newark, prior to joining the Special Reserve of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own Middlesex Regiment in August 1913 and was later attached to the King’s African Rifles. After contracting malaria during his service in German East Africa, succumbed to pneumonia at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, a month to the day after his brother Edwin was killed.
