Leslie Jackson Savage was born in 1895 at Heanor and was the son of John Henry a colliery banks contractor and Elizabeth Savage née Jackson of 22 Beaconsfield Street Hyson Green Nottingham. His father John Henry was born in 1861 at Ruddington and his mother Elizabeth Jackson was born in 1865 at Bradmore, they were married on 2nd August 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Regstration District, they went on to have 6 children, sadly one was t die in infancy or early childhood, their children were Nellie b1891 Heanor, Leslie Jackson b1895 Heanor, Ida Elizabeth b1898 Langley Mill, William Henry b1900 Langley Mill, and Hilda May b1903 Basford. in the 1911 census the family are living at 22 Beaconsfield Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as John Henry Savage 49 yrs a colliery bankcontractor, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 46 yrs and their children, Nellie 20 yrs a hosiery maker, Leslie Jackson 15 yrs a coal merchant clerk, Ida Elizabeth 13 yrs a dressmakers assistant, William Henry 11 yrs a scholar and Hilda May 8 yrs a scholar, also living with them is Edith Jackson 25 yrs of age born Bradmore a shipping house clerk and a niece.
Lance Corporal Leslie Jackson Savage enlisted on 2nd September 1914 and joined the 15th cavalry training reserve The Hussars at Scarborough. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 3 days and his occupation as that of a clerk, his address was 22 Beaconsfield Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and his next of kin was his father John Henry Savage of the same address. On 15th June 1915 he was transferred to the 3rd battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment.) Promoted to Lance Corporal on 10th August 1915 and was embarked on 17th October 1915 to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, disembarking at Alexandria on 5th February 1916. He was transferred to the Western Front arriving at Marseilles, France on 8th July 1916. He went missing between 27th and 28th August 1917 and was subsequently reported killed in action on that date. He is buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium
