Family History

Herbert Ernest Townrow was born in 1894 at Nottingham and was the son of Frederick a carter at a gas works and Sarah Townrow née Sharp of 13 Bangor Street Nottingham. His father Frederick Townrow was born in 1859 at Eckington, Derbyshire and his mother Sarah Sharp was born in 1860 at Ompton, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were Minnie b1883 Ompton, Sydney b1884 Ompton, Clara b1888 Ompton, Albert b1892 Ompton, Herbert Ernest b1894 Nottingham and Arthur b1897 at Mapperley, Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Bangor Street, Nottingham and are shown as Frederick 52 yrs a carter at a gas works, he is living with his wife Sarah 51 yrs and their children Sydney 27 yrs a motor driver, Clara 23 yrs a patern porter, Albert 19 yrs a gas fitter and Arthur 14 yrs a scholar. Herbert Ernest is not listed at the address on the night of the census and it has not been able to trace him at any other address on the 1911 census.

Military History

Private Herbert Ernest Townrow,he enlisted at Nottingham early in the war with the King's Royal Rifle Corps but transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers in which his brother was also serving. He landed in France on 9th September 1915, he died of wounds on 30th September 1915 at the 6th Field Ambulance and is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 6 November 1915: TOWNROW, Private H Townrow, 12th Northumberland Fusiliers, 13 Bangor Street, Nottingham, died of wounds September 30th, age 21. His brother Corporal Albert Edward Townrow enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 25th battalion (Tyneside Irish) Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 15th October 1917 and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
