Family History

John Turner Pond was born in 1893 at Newark and was the son of William a general labourer and Martha Maria Pond née Turner of 6, Mount Square, Appleton Gate, Newark. His father William was born in 1857 at Whitwell, Derbyshire and his mother Martha Maria Turner was born in 1862 at Alford, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1882 at Newark and went on to have 11 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Florence Maria b1883, Joseph Samuel b1885, Maud Annie b1887, Ethel b1888, Jenny b1889, John Turner b1893, Herbert Sydney b1902 and Alfred Edward Pond b1904 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family lived at 11 Cawkwell's yard, Stodman Street, Newark. and are shown as William 52 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Martha Maria 49 yrs and their children, Jenny 22 yrs a willow peeler, John Turner 18 yrs a plasterers labourer, Herbert Sydney 9 yrs a scholar and Alfred Edward 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private John Turner Pond enlisted on 15th August 1914 at Newark and served with 'B' Company 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 27th December 1914 and was killed in action on 5th July 1915 he is buried at Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Article published 14th July 1915 in Newark Advertiser :- Son of William & Martha Maria Pond, Cawkwell’s Yard, Newark. Prior to the war worked for Messrs. Quibell Bros. Limited. Killed on the morning of July 5th at 6.15 and shot through the head. News received in a letter from Cpl. J. Blythe to the Mayor of Newark who had just sent Pte. Pond a parcel of cigarettes.
