Charles Gilbert Burn was born in 1885 at North Cave and was the son of William a labourer on an estate and Elizabeth Burn née Massey of The Bungalow, Hotham. His father was born in 1851 at South Dalton, Yorkshire and his mother Elizabeth Massey was born in 1855 at North Cave, they were married in 1872 at Howden and went on to have the following children, John 1874 George 1876, William 1879, Tom 1880 , Charles Gilbert 1885, Harry 1889, Isabella b1892, Arthur 1896 and Albert 1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at Hotham near Brough, Yorkshire and are shown as William 60 yrs a labourer on an estate, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 56 yrs and their children John 37 yrs a waggoner, Tom 31 yrs a labourer on an estate, Charles Gilbert 26 yrs a groom, Isabella 19 yrs a domestic servant and Albert 13 yrs a scholar.
Private Charles Burns enlisted at York on 6th February 1903 , he gave his age as 18 years and six months, his occupation was that of a groom. he served with the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. On 1st March 1905 he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 5th August 1914 at Halifax and landed in France on 31st August 1914, He was seriously wounded by shrapnel and returned to England on2nd October 1914. He admitted to the 4th Scottish General Hospital at Glasgow and died on 11th March 1915 of his wounds and chronic dysentery. He is buried at Glasgow Western Metropolis, Glasgow.
His brother Albert Burn served in the 1/8th West Yorkshire Regiment and was killed in action on 9th October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial. ( He is not recorded on the Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour)
