Arthur Nettleship was born in 1885 at Eckington and was the youngest son of the late William a coal miner and Mary Nettleship née Johnson of Eckington, Yorkshire. His father William was born in 1838 at Gringley, he died in 1915 aged 77 yrs his mother Mary Johnson was born in 1840 at Eckington, she died in 1899 aged 59 yrs, they were married on 16th September 1860 at Eckington, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Eckington, Thomas b1861 George b1864, Maria b1866, Margaret b1869, Eliza b1871, William b1873, John b1878, Herbert b1880, Joseph b1882 and Arthur b1885. Arthur married his wife Mabel Beatrice Harrison (born 6th April 1887, Winshill, Derbyshire) in 1908, and they lived at 158 Warsop Vale, Shirebrook, they went on to have two children, Mary Hester born June 1911 and George Arthur born September 1915. In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Mansfield Road, Warsop and are shown as Arthur 26 yrs a coal miner and Mabel Beatrice 23 yrs Following his death his widow Mabel was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 25th November 1918.

Military History

Private Arthur Nettleship enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 24th March 1915. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
