John Lewis Morgan was born in 1898 at Fulbeck, Lincolnshire and was the son of David John a club steward and Ada Emily Morgan of The Newark Arms Hotel. His father David John was born in 1871 in Wales and his mother Ada Emily Henson was born in 1873 at Gelston, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration District, they went on to have a further son Frank Henson Morgan b1901 at Burton on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Constitutional Club, Silver Street, Lincoln and are shown as David John 40 yrs a club steward , he is living with his wife Ada Emily 38 yrs and their 2 sons John Lewis 13 yrs a scholar and Frank Henson 10 yrs a scholar, also visiting the address is Sophia Henson 76 yrs a widow and is shown as a visitor.
Private John Lewis Morgan enlisted at Lincoln and initially served with the service number 174188 in the Royal Engineers, he was serving with the 13th battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and died of wounds at the 10th General Hospital Rouen on 4th April 1918 and is buried at St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Article published 10th April 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr & Mrs D.J. Morgan, Newark Arms Hotel. Joined the army in July 1916 and went to France on Xmas Eve, 1916. He was wounded in March 1917 and spent eight months in hospital. Returning to the front in the first week of Jan. 1918, since then he had been in the fierce fighting which has taken place. Died of wounds at 10th General Hospital, Rouen.
