Hezekiah Mendham was born in 1887 at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire and was the son of Frederick and Phoebe Mendham née Ward of Winfold Rd., Waterbeach, Cambs. His father was born in 1848 at Waterbeach and his mother Phoebe Ann Ward was born in 1848 at Heringswell, Suffolk, they were married in 1869 and went on to have 11 children, 5 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Lanes, Fen End, Waterbeach and are shown as Frederick 63 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Phoebe 62 yrs and their children Beatrice 27 yrs no occupation listed and Hezekiah 24 yrs a labourer, also at the address are 3 grandchildren.
Private Hezekiah Mendham attested on 10th December 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 36 days, he was a maltster and lived at 12 Elgin Place, Appleton Gate, Newark, his next of kin was his father Frederick Mendham of Winfold Road, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. He gave his religion as the Salvation Army. He was posted to the reserves the following day. Mobilised for war on 6th March 1916 he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed at Boulogne on 11th July 1916 and was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters on 22nd July 1916. He was admitted to a field ambulance on 31st December 1916 and then to the 16th General Hospital, Le Treport with a fever and on 17th January 1917 was returned to England with deafness. He was treated and recovered in England and again returned to France where on 5th October 1918 he was reported missing in action and later killed in action on that date. He is buried at Guizancourt Farm Cemetery, Aisne, France. Grave reference B.2.
Article published in the local Newark Herald/Advertiser following his death :- Son of Mr T. Mendham, Winfold Road, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. Enlisted in December 1915, resided at 12 Elgin Place, Appletongate, Newark and employed as maltster. Sailed for Boulogne on 11th July 1916. Invalided to England on 17th January 1917 with a chill and deafness.
