William Henry Jackson Measham

William Henry Jackson Measham was born on 12th April 1890 (A/M/J Southwell) in Southwell and was the son of Mary Measham. It is probable that his father was Harry Jackson who married Mary in 1894. Mary Measham was born in Ashby de la Zouch in 1870 (A/M/J Ashby de la Zouch), the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Measham; she was baptised in Ashby de la Zouch on 4 December 1870. Richard and Elizabeth had several other children including a son, William, who was born in 1872 and baptised in Ashby de la Zouch on 6 October 1872. The family was still living in Ashby de la Zouch at the time of the 1881 Census when they were living on Market Street. Mary was ten years old and William nine. However, Richard and Elizabeth had moved to Southwell by 1891 and were living on Kirklington Road. Richard (52 b. Repton Derbyshire) was a basket maker. Only two of their children, Mary (20) and William (19), who was also a basket maker, were still living at home. Also in the household was their grandson William HJ Measham who had been born the previous year. By 1901 Richard and Elizabeth were living at Westfield, Farndon, Newark; their grandson William (9) was still living with them. Their son, William, and his family were also living at Westfield, Farndon. Their daughter Mary had married Harry Jackson in 1894 (A/M/J Southwell) and they had at least three children: Martha Ann b. 1894 (J/A/S Southwell), Mary Elizabeth b. 1896 (J/A/S Southwell) and Frank b. 1900 (A/M/J Southwell). Two other children were recorded on the register of births, mother's previous name Measham: Thomas b. 1898 (O/N/D Southwell) and Lily b. 1903 (O/N/D Southwell) but they have not been positively identified as Harry and Mary's children. In 1901 Harry (41 b. Nottingham), a lace maker, and Mary were living at Westgate, Southwell, with their three children Martha (6), Mary E (4) and Frank (1). William's mother, Mary, died in 1904 (J/F/M Southwell) aged about 33. Harry married Emily Cox in 1906 (J/A/S Southwell) and they had one child, Ellen b. 1907 (A/M/J Southwell). They were still living at Westfield, Southwell, in 1911; Frank (10) was the only child of Harry's first marriage in the home on the night of the census. William's grandmother, Elizabeth Measham, died in 1904 (O/N/D Newark) and in 1911 he and his widowed grandfather were living on Farndon Road, Newark, with his uncle and aunt, William and Lucy Measham. William's wife, Lucy Jane nee Smith, was born in 1869 at Maythorne, near Southwell. They were married on 19th April 1897 at Southwell and went on to have the following children: Walter Eric b1898 (bap 13 March 1898 Farndon St Peter d. 1905 J/A/S Newark), Florrie b1899 (J/F/M Newark), Horace birth registered 1901 (J/F/M Newark), Alec b1903 (A/M/J Newark), Alice b1907 (A/M/J Newark) and Lucy May b1908 (O/N/D Newark d. 1915 O/N/D Newark) who were all were born in Farndon. In the 1911 census the family are living at Farndon Fields, Newark, and are shown as William 39 yrs a basket maker, he is living with his wife Lucy Jane 41 yrs and their children, Florrie 12 yrs a scholar, Horace 10 yrs a scholar Alec 7 yrs a scholar, Alice 4 yrs and Lucy May 2 yrs also living at the address is Richard Measham 72 yrs a widower and basket maker who is listed as father (of William) and also William 20 yrs a basket maker and shown as his nephew. Richard died in 1918 (J/F/M Newark). William Henry Jackson married his wife Lucy Alliss on 27th May 1916 (A/M/J Newark); they had a daughter Kathleen born 1916 (J/A/S Newark) who died aged 5 months on 9 January 1917 (J/F/M Newark). They lived at 33 Stanley Street Newark. Lucy Measham completed a form for the army in May 1919 giving details of William's surviving blood relatives. Both his parents were dead and she only provided the names of his uncle, William Measham, of Farndon, his sister Elizabeth Jackson (described as 'full blood') of 7 St Augustine Street, Meadows, Nottingham, and his brother Frank Jackson (described as half-brother) whose address was not known.
