Percival Naylor Kent was the youngest son of Jackson Goodenough Kent and Frances Pears, born in 1870 Kingston, Surrey. His father died when Percival was only 4 years old. When he was 10 years of age he was living with his widowed mother and his siblings at Grove Road, Elm Bank, Kingston, Surrey. 1896 married to Australian born Susan Katherine Tooth. The couple had 3 children.
He probably started his military career in the early 1890’s as the London Gazette announced his promotion from 2nd Lieutenant to Lieutenant in 1894. Dated 28th June 1900 he was to be Aide-de-Camp to Major General E P Leach, VC, CB, Royal Engineers, temporarily commanding the Troops, Belfast District. Also, the Gazette announced his rise to Captain in the Dragoon Guards in 1901 when he was staying in the Windsor Hotel, London with his wife.. He must have served on the Boer War as he was awarded 3 campaign medals whilst in the 1st Imperial Light Horse for that theatre of war. 1913 saw him as Captain with the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry Territorial Force. Kent was long in resident at Blyth where he was very popular and respected buy all. A sidesman in the Parish Church and one always ready to give assistance in any kind of work, he will be sadly missed. His two sons are serving their King and Country. We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Kent, her daughter, and her sons in their great loss.
