Albert Johnson was born in 1899 at Newark and was the son of Richard a maltster and Susan Johnson née Weaver of 73 Sleaford Road, Newark. His father Richard was born in 1863 at Coddington and his mother Susan Weaver was born in 1863 at Coddington, they were married in 1887 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, Florence b1888 Coddington, Arthur b1891 Coddington and Albert b1899 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 44 Millgate, Newark and are shown as Richard 48 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Susan 48 yrs and their children, Florrie 23 yrs a dressmakers machinist, Albert 12 yrs a scholar and Cyril 8 yrs a scholar.
Private Albert Johnson enlisted on 29th May 1917 at Newark and initially served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he later transferred to the 8th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 8th October 1918 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published in the Newark Herald on 9th November 1918 :- Youngest son of Mr & Mrs R. Johnson, 73 Sleaford Road, Newark. A native of Newark and attended Christ Church Day School. Afterwards being employed at Messrs. Gilstrap, Earp & Co. where he remained for four years, practically up to the time of his enlistment on May 29th, 1917. He joined the Notts. & Derbys. afterwards transferred to the Lincolns. Went out to France last Easter Monday, having been home on leave at Christmas.
