Family History

Charles William Hough was born in 1882 at Silverdale, Staffordshire and was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Jane Hough née Barnett of Silverdale, Staffordshire. His father Samuel was born in 1843 and his mother Jane Barnett was born in 1848 both were born in Cheshire, they were married in 1870 at Wolstanton Staffordshire, they had the following children, Eliza b1873, Charles b1882, George b1887 and Lucy b1891 all were born in Silverdale. Charles married his wife Sarah Alice Whitingham (born 9th October 1883) on 13th November 1904 at Saint Giles, Newcastle under Lyme, they had the following children, Children Nancy, born 1905, Bertha, born 1909 and Evelyn , born 1910 and Lucy born 1913. They lived at 65 Warsop Vale, Shirebrook. In the 1911 census the family lived 44 Cavendish Street, Shirebrook and were shown as Charles Hough 28 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Alice 27 yrs and their children, Nancy 6 yrs, Bertha 2 yrs and Evelyn 11 months. Following his death his widow Sarah Alice was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 10th March 1919.

Military History

Private Charles William Hough enlisted at Bulford, he served with the Ryal Army Medical Corps, he was killed in action on 27th August 1918 and is buried at Douchy-Les-Avette British Cemetery, France.
