Bertie Widdowson Hopkinson was born in 1898 he was the son of John a farm labourer and Eliza Ann Hopkinson née Widdowson and the brother of May, Hilda, Frank and Gladys Hopkinson of Eastthorpe Farm Ruddington Nottinghamshire. John was born in 1875 at Ratcliffe, Eliza Ann Widdowson was born in 1875 at Ruddington, they were married on 9th August 1897 at St Wilfrids Church at Wilford, Nottinghamshire, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at South Wilford, Nottinghamshire, John 36 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 36 yrs and their children, Bertie Widdowson 13 yrs a farm labourer, May 11 yrs, Hilda 6 yrs, Frank 4 yrs and Gladys 2 years of age.

Military History

Private Bertie Widdowson Hopkinson enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Wilford, he initially served with the service number 6571 in the Lincolnshire Regiment before transferring to the Tank Corps, he was killed in action on 23rd November 1917, he is buried at Anneux British Cemetery, France.
