Hubert James Francis Irving was born in 1898 at Loughborough and was the son of John Sherwen a mechanical engineer and Caroline Minnie Irving née Disney. In 1901 they lived at Loughborough and in 1911 at 105, Albert Street, Rugby. His father John Sherwen was born in 1872 at Newark and his mother Caroline Minnie Disney was born in 1861 at Bath, they were married in 1892 at Derby and had the following children, Cecil Eric b1893 at Derby, Malcolm Claude b1895 Loughborough and Hubert James Francis Irving b1898 Loughborough. In the 1911 census the family are living at 105 Albert Street, Rugby and are shown as John Sherwen 39 yrs a mechanical engineer, he is living with his wife Caroline Minnie 50 yrs and their children, Cecil Eric 18 yrs a pupil teacher and Hubert James Francis 13 yrs a scholar. .
Private Hubert James Francis Irving attested on 11th December 1915 at Rugby, he was 18 years and 3 months old, his address was 24 Lancaster Road, Rugby and his next of kin was his father John Sherman Irving of the same address, he gave his occupation as that of a teacher, he was posted tot he reserves. He was mobilised for war on 10th May 1916 and posted to the 14th battalion London Scottish Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 29th September 1916 and joined his battalion in the field on 15th October 1916. He was killed in action on 5th May 1917 and having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
His connection with Newark is that his father was born and lived at the town and his Grandfather was the latte Dr James Irving formerly of Newark and Long Bennington.
