Father: George Harby Ellis Hoe, born in 1871 at Radford, Nottingham and working as a stoker. Mother: Alice Harby Ellis Hoe, born in 1867 in Nottingham, working as a lace hand. Brothers:Albert, born in 1890 at Collingham, worked as Midland Railway porter and Bertram, born in 1892 at Collingham working as a porter. Sisters: Florence, born in 1888 at Nottingham, working as a lace finisher. The family lived at 20 Ernest Terrace, Nottingham before moving to 165 Waterway Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Private George Hoe enlisted originally in the South Notts. Hussars, was transferred to the Oxfordshire Hussars before joining the 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry. He was in the front line during a quiet period on 05/02/1918 when he was hit by a sniper and killed. He was buried at at Grand Seraucourt British Cemetery.
Obituary published 18th March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOE. – Died of wounds, February 5th, 1918, Pte. George Hoe, 165 Waterway-street, sniper, Somerset Light Infantry. Oh, why was he taken, so young and so fair, from all those at home who loved him so dear? hard was the blow which compelled us to part, with one so loving and dear to our hearts. – From sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brothers.” In memoriam published 7th February 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOE. – In loving memory of Pte. G. Hoe, 6th (Battn.) Somerset L.I., formerly South Notts. Hussars, died of wounds, France, February 5th, 1918.
