John Arthur Congreve Hoe was born in 1894 at Newark and was the son of William Congreve a green grocer and Elizabeth Hoe née Perry of 55 Mill Gate, Newark. His father William Congreve Hoe was born in 1870 at Newark and his mother Elizabeth Perry was born in 1871 at Newark, they were married in 1891 at Newark and went on to have the following children, William Albert b1892, John Arthur Congreve b1894, Ernest Congreve b1897, Annie b1898, Mary b1899 and Violet b1908, all were born at Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 55 Mill Gate, Newark and are shown as William Congreve Hoe 41 yrs a green grocer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their children, William Albert 19 yrs a green grocer, John Arthur Congreve 17 yrs a labourer, Ernest Congreve 14 yrs a scholar, Annie 13 yrs a scholar, Mary 12 yrs a scholar and Violet 3 yrs of age
Lance Corporal John Hoe enlisted at Newark in August 1914 and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France in February 1915 . He Died at the 141st Field Ambulance on 29th September 1918 from wounds sustained that day and is buried at Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Article published 6th November 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Mr & Mrs W. Hoe, 55 Millgate, Newark. A native of Newark and attended Christ Church School, afterwards helped in his father’s business until he was 18. When he went to Mr T.W. Garner’s and was on the engine. Afterwards at the flax factory in Farndon Road and when they closed, declined to go with them to Ireland and went to work at Messrs. Nicholson & Son’s foundry. Volunteered at the big recruiting meeting at the Kinema in August 1914. Joined-up on Sept. 2nd, going into the Notts. & Derbys. For a time he was drilled at Newark and Harpenden. Going to France in Feb. 1915, he was home on leave in May 1916 and again in August 1917. Died at the 141st Ambulance on Sept. 29th from wounds sustained that day. As a boy he was in Mr W.T. Pratt’s football team and had played for several other local sides. his brothers, Pte. William A. Hoe (Middlesex) and Pte. Ernest Hoe (South Staffs.) are serving in France.
