Family History

Frederick Hickman was born in 1899 at Newark and was the son of the late William Hickman a gardener and Mary Hickman née Hopewell of 37 Wood Street, Newark. His father William was born in 1857 at Newark and died in 1900 aged 43 yrs and his mother Mary Hopewell was born in 1856 at Upton, they were married in 1879 at Newark and went on to have the following children all born in Newark, Thomas Hopewell b1879, William b1884, Alfred Henry b1886, Gertrude b1888, Eleanor b1895 and Frederick b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Wood Street, Newark and are shown as Mary Hickman , head of the family 54 yrs and a widow and dress maker, she is living with her children, William 27 yrs a painter, Alfred 25 yrs an iron moulder, Nellie 16 yrs a scholar and Fred 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Frederick Hickman enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry and was killed in action on 24th April 1918 his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
