Family History

Thomas Herbet Helliwell was born on 12th February 1893 at Newark and was the son of Barker a compositor and Frances Helliwell of 38 William Street, Newark His father was born in 1864 at Todmorden, Yorkshire and his mother Frances was born in 1865 at Lambeth. they were married c1888 and went on to have 5 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Thomas Hebert b1893, Elizabeth Lauretta b1899, Joseph Barker b1902 and Gertrude Letitia b1904 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family were living at 38 William Street, Newark and are shown as Barker 47 yrs a compositor, he is living with his wife Frances 45 yrs and their children Thomas Herbert 18 yrs a junior draughtsman, Elizabeth 13 yrs a scholar, Joseph Barker 9 yrs a scholar and Gertrude Leticia 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Trooper Thomas Herbert Helliwell enlisted on 4th October 1912 in Newark, he gave his occupation as that of a draughtsman. He served with the 1st battalion of the Life Guards . He was killed in action on 20th November 1914 and having no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Article published 2nd December 1914 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr & Mrs B. Helliwell of William Street. Born on Feb. 12th, 1893. He was brought up at the Wesleyan Day School and gave great promise as a scholar, winning many awards. For two or three years engaged in the drawing office of Messrs. Simpsons, Lowfields, afterwards transferring to Messrs. Ransomes while continuing his studies at the Science & Art School. His heart was always military, joining the scouts and afterwards the 8th Territorials from whom he was nominated to the 1st Life Guards about two years ago. Last home on leave in July. A striking figure of young manhood, being about 6ft 3in.
