Ernest Edward Harrop was born in 1899 at Holbeach and was the youngest son of John William a carpenter and Ellen Harrop nee Nicholson of Hurn Rd., Holbeach, Lincs. His father John William was born in 1858 at Holbeach and his mother Ellen Nicholson was born in 1859 at South Lincoln, they were married in 1878 at Holbeach and went on to have 11 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, George b1879, William b1880, Ellen b1883, Mary b1885, May b1890, John b1893, Ethel b1895 and Ernest b1899 all were born in Holbeach In the 1911 census the family are living at Foxes Lowe, Holbeach and are shown as John William 53 yrs a carpenter, he is living with his wife Ellen 52 yrs and their son Ernest 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Ernest Edward Harrop enlisted 12th March 1916 at Ealing in London whilst residing at Holbeach, he served with the 2nd battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th September 1918 and is buried in Pigeon Ravine Cemetery, Somme, France.
Article published 8th November 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Youngest son of Mr J. & Mrs E. Harrop, Hurn Road, Holbeach, Lincolnshire. Brother of Pte. William Harrop, ASC, 15 Lovers’ Lane, Newark. At one time employed by Mrs Bryan, Northgate and afterwards with Messrs. James Smith & Son, London Road. Remaining there until March 12th, 1916 when he enlisted in the Yeomanry. Subsquently transferred to the Worcs. Regt. and went out with them to France in Feb. 1918. While in Newark he attended North-End Wesleyan Church. His brother William worked at Messrs. Jas. Simpson & Co. and is now in Belgium having been gassed twice. Another brother, Pte. Jack Harrop is “somewhere in France”.
