Thomas Grosse was born in 1884 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a maltsters labourer and Ellen Grosse née Huckerby of 58 Northgate Newark. His father Jospeh was born in 1864 in Newark and his mother Ellen Huckerby was born in 1863 also in Newark , they were married in 1881 in Newark ad went on to have 8 children, sadly one was to die in infancy their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were, Thomas b1884, Alice b1887, George b1890, Edith b1894, Alfred b1897, Joseph b1900, Rose b1902 and Nellie b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 58 Northgate Newark and are shown as Joseph 47 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 48 yrs and their children, Thomas27 yrs a maltsters labourer, George 21 yrs a coal carter, Edith 17 yrs no occupation listed, Alfred 14 yrs a scholar, Joseph 11 yrs a scholar, Rose 9 yrs a scholar and Nellie 5 yrs. Also living with them is Henry Grosse 3 months a grandson. He was the son of Joseph and Ellen Grosse of 58 Northgate Newark. Thomas was the husband of Isabel Trickett whom he married in 1911 at Newark
Private Thomas Grosse enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He died on 23rd June 1917 and is buried at Aix-Noullette Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
His younger brother also served and died in the 'Great War' Private Alfred Grosse was called up for service at Derby on 26th October 1916, he was 20 yrs and 13 days old, he was living at 58 North Gate, Newark, he was a maltsters labourer and his next of kin was his father Joseph of the same address. He was posted to the 2/7th battalion Royal Scots Regiment and disembarked at Boulogne on 23rd February 1918, he joined his unit in the field on 26th February 1918. He was killed in action on 2nd December 1918 and is buried at Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, Pas de Calais, France. His younger brother Joseph also sered and died in the 'Great War' Private Joseph Grosse served with the 14th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers he was killed in action on 2nd December 1918 and is buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference XVIII.B.6 Article published 14th July 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Resided with wife at 21, Pelham Street, Newark. 33 years of age, the eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. Grosse of Northgate. Had been a working maltster at Messrs. Gilstraps’ for seventeen years before he joined up on the 27th July last year. He went out to France on December 12th. The first intimation his wife received was one from the War Office, stating he had died in hospital from wounds, although a few days previously his parents received a letter from his cousin, Pte. P. Grosse, of Beacon Hill, stating that he had died in the same hospital in which he was being treated for a sore throat. On Thursday a letter was received from the Wesleyan Chaplain: “He was wounded in the head by a bomb. They got him to the Field Ambulance, but he passed away as the medical officer was dressing his wound”.
