Joseph Grosse was born in 1899 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a maltsters labourer and Ellen Grosse née Huckerby of 58 Northgate Newark. His father Jospeh was born in 1864 in Newark and his mother Ellen Huckerby was born in 1863 also in Newark , they were married in 1881 in Newark ad went on to have 8 children, sadly one was to die in infancy their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were, Thomas b1884, Alice b1887, George b1890, Edith b1894, Alfred b1897, Joseph b1900, Rose b1902 and Nellie b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 58 Northgate Newark and are shown as Joseph 47 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 48 yrs and their children, Thomas27 yrs a maltsters labourer, George 21 yrs a coal carter, Edith 17 yrs no occupation listed, Alfred 14 yrs a scholar, Joseph 11 yrs a scholar, Rose 9 yrs a scholar and Nellie 5 yrs. Also living with them is Henry Grosse 3 months a grandson.
Private Joseph Grosse enlisted on 16th May 1917 initially served with the West Riding Regiment and later transferred to the 14th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers he was wounded in action on 2nd December 1918 dying at 56th casualty clearing station and is buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference XVIII.B.6
His older brother Alfred also served in the Great War, Private Alfred Grosse was called up for service at Derby on 26th October 1916, he was 20 yrs and 13 days old, he was living at 58 North Gate, Newark, he was a maltsters labourer and his next of kin was his father Joseph of the same address. He was posted to the 2/7th battalion Royal Scots Regiment and disembarked at Boulogne on 23rd February 1918, he joined his unit in the field on 26th February 1918. He was killed in action on 2nd December 1918 and is buried at Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, Pas de Calais, France. His elder brother Thomas also served and died in the 'Great War' Private Thomas Grosse enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He died on 23rd June 1917 and is buried at Aix-Noullette Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. Article published 18th December 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Youngest son of Mr & Mrs J. Grosse, Newsagent, 58 Northgate, Newark. An old Mount School boy and worked for Messrs. Gilstrap, Earp & Co. (with whom his father has been employed for a considerable number of years). Enlisted in the West Riding Regt. On May 16th, 1917 and afterwards transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers. Went out to France on Easter Sunday, 1918. Previously he had been gassed and suffered from trench fever. Died at 56 Casualty Clearing Station of bronchial-pneumonia following influenza.
