William Grocock was born in 1877 at Newark and he married his wife Ellen Dickinson in 1899 at Sheffield, they went on to have 2 children Walter b1905 and Florence b1907 both born in Sheffield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4/1 Charlotte Street, Sheffield and are shown as William 34 yrs a boiler riveter, he is living with his wife Ellen 31 yrs a sewing machinist and their 2 children, Walter 6 yrs and Florence 4 yrs. Following his death his wife Ellen was living at 6 Clinton Street, Newark.
Lance Corporal William Grocock enlisted at Sheffield and served with the 8th battalion Duke f Wellington's (West Riding Regiment ) his medal index cards sates that he first entered a theatre of war on 5th September 1915 in the Balkans. He was killed in action on 14th September 1916 and is buried at Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille, Somme, France.
Article published 11th October 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- “Husband of Mrs E. Grocock, 6 Clinton Street, Newark. Brother of Mr J. Edward Grocock of Messrs. Mumby & Son. Apprenticed with Messrs. Farrars at the boilerworks and later went to Messrs. Davy Bros., Sheffield. Enlisted in the 8th Duke of Wellingtons, about Jan. 1914. Went through the Dardanelles and was in the Suvla Bay retirement, after which he was sent to Egypt, leaving there for France about last June. He was very fond of football and played occasionally for Newark Town as outside left. The position which had been splendidly filled by his brother Ted, who kept him out of the team. Would have been 40 next December and leaves a widow and one boy.
