Arthur Green was born in 1889 at Newark and was the son of Charles Hercules Green and Maria Green, née Hopkinson. His father Charles was born in 1846 at Derby and his mother Maria Hopkinson was born in 1849 at Huddersfield, they were married in 1867 at Derby and went on to have the following children, George b1869 Derby, Emma b1873 Derby, Harriett b1876 Newark, David b1879 Newark, John b1891 Newark , Fred b1883 Newark, Frank b1886 Newark, Arthur b1889 Newark, Walter b1892 Newark and Kate b1894 at Newark. Arthur Green married his wife Lily Moss (born 31st March 1889) in 1910 , their marriage was recorded in the Lewisham Registration District, they lived at Merchant Road, New Eltham, London and went on to have 2 children, Lilian Rose born 27th May 1911 and Arthur born 16th July 1913. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Buckhurst Road, Frimley Green, Farnborough and are shown as Arthur 22 yrs a shoeing smith, he is living with his wife Lily 22 yrs of age. His widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week for herself and her two children, to commence on 31st July 1916.
Shoeing Smith Arthur Green enlisted at Newark on 19th April 1906 he gave his age as 18 yrs and 2 months, he signed on for 3 years with the colours and 9 yrs in the reserves. He served with the 68th battery Royal Field Artillery and landed in France on 23rd August 1914 and died of pericarditis (heart failure) at No 4 Casualty clearing station on 12th January 1916 and is buried at Beauval Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Article published in the Newark Advertiser 9th February 1916 ;- Before enlistment worked at Messrs. Cafferata’s Hawton Works. Had been in the army ten years and went to the front on the outbreak of war. He had only six days leave and that eight weeks before he died of heart failure. Has three brothers in the army, one a prisoner in Germany. Leaves a young wife and two children.
