Robert Fincham was born in 1871 at Newark and was the son of John a groom and Sarah Ann Fincham née Fell of 6, Hospital Cottages, Newark. His father John was born in 1839 at Feltwell Norfolk and his mother Sarah Ann Fell was born in 1842 at Laxton, they were married in 1865 at Newark and had the following children, William b1868, Robert b1871, Henry b1875, Fred b1875 and John b1885. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Barrack Yard, Mill Gate, Newark and as shown as John 72 yrs a retired groom, he is living with his wife Sarah 69 yrs of age. They state they have been married for 45 yrs and have had 8 children. Robert Fincham married his wife Elizabeth Golland on 12th September 1914 at the Hull Registry Office. His widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week she was living at 127 Day Street, Hull.
Private Robert Fincham enlisted on 17th November 1914 at Hull, he gave his age as 48 yrs and 11 months, his address as 31 Stansforth Place, Hessel Rod, Hull, he was a labourer and his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth of the same address. He stated he had seen previously military service was in the Notts & Derbys Regiment for 10 yrs and left time expired. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and joined at the depot at Derby on 19th November 1914. He joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 1st July 1915 and landed at Capes Helles at Gallipoli on 20th July 1915. He embarked Imbros on 29th January 1916 disembarking at Alexandria on 3rd February 1916. He then joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 28th June 1916 . He was posted to the Machine Gun Corps and served with the 33rd Bn attached 59th Div. H.Q. He died of wounds ( gun shot wound to abdomen) on 19th February 1918 and is buried at Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 19th February 1919 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Mr & Mrs J. Fincham of 6, Hospital Cottages, Newark. Husband of Elizabeth Knott (formerley Fincham) 127 Day Street, Anlaby, Hull. A Newark lad and attended Christ Church school, after which he joined the Regular Army. On finishing his time he served 24 years on the railway. Living in Hull when war broke out and promptly enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters. Trained with the 11th Division at Belton Park before going with them to Gallipoli, where he was slightly wounded at Suvla Bay. Later went to France and attached to the MGC. Aged 48 this month. Hit by an aeroplane bomb at ten at night, on the 18th Feb. near Achiet-le-Grand. Died in hospital at 2:30 on the 19th.
