Lewis Thompson was born on 16th May 1878 in Retford and was the son of John Henry a green grocer and Martha Davison, (nee Franklin ) of Retford. In the 1901 census the family are living at 19 South Street, Ordsall,Retford Lewis is 22 years of age single and a general labourer, he is living at the address with his parents and two sisters Isabel and Florie. On 27th December 1904 at Dronfield he marries his wife Charlotte Ellen Ward. In the 1911 census Lewis and his family are living at 46 Trent Street, Retford, he is 34 years of age and an assistant dyer, he has been married to his wife Charlotte Ellen who had been born in Dronfield, Derbyshire for six years and they have 2 daughters, Sybil Maria 5 years of age and Robina 2 years of age. At the time of Lewis death they are living at 1, Cross Lane, Dronfield, Derbyshire.
Lewis enlisted on 1st October 1914 and served with C Company of the 10th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment , a 'pals' battalion known as 'The Grimsby Chums' . He gave his age as 32 years and 128 days and his occupation as that of a coal hewer and that he resided in Dronfield, Derbyshire. He embarked from Southampton on 9th January 1916 for France and was killed in action on 26th February 1916 he is buried in Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois-Grenier, Nord, France grave reference IV B 40 . Pte Lewis Thompson Davison Retford Times 24 March 1916 News has been received of the death of another of Retfords gallant sons on the field of battle – Pte Lewis Thompson Davison of the 10th Lincolns. Deceased who was 36 years of age met his death in France on Feb 26. He was a son of Mr John Davison, formerly butcher of Carolgate. He was formerly employed at Messrs Clark and Co’s laundry and then went to the docks at Grimsby, where he enlisted. Deep sympathy is felt for his widow and her four young children who are now living at Dronfield.
