Ernest Burrows was born in 1895 at Newark and was the son of William a corporation labourer and Maria Burrows née Harrison of 38 Albert Street, Newark. His father William was born in 1852 at East Bridgford and his mother Maria Harrison was born in 1854 at Newark, they were married in 1872 at Newark and went on to have 12 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their children were , William b1873, Jesse b1878, Robert Henry b1879, Thomas 1883 Frances Maria b1885, Sidney 1887, Samuel b1890, Ernest b1896 and Dorothy b1899. In the 1911 census Ernest and his parents are living at 13 Clinton Street, Newark and were shown as William 59 yrs a corporation labourer, he is living with his wife Maria 57 yrs and their son Ernest 15 yrs a railway checker.
Private Ernest Burrows enlisted at Newark on 3rd September 1914 he gave his age as 19 yrs and 75 days, he stated he was a labourer , he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 16th July 1915. He was seriously wounded in the thigh on 14th July 1916 and was returned to England. He recovered from his wounds and returned to France on 1st March 1917 and on 14th August 1917 he received an accidental wound to his left arm when a bomb exploded. An enquiry was held into the incident in which it was stated that Pte Burrows was working in a trench with Pte Pratt when the later struck a bomb with a pick causing it to explode injuring both soldiers. It was deemed an accident and no blame was attached to anyone. He was killed in action on 1st October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
Article published on 7th November 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Youngest son of Mrs Burrows, 38 Albert Street, Newark. Attended Christ Church School and up to enlistment on Sept. 3rd 1914, was employed by Messrs. Abbott & Co. Drafted to France on July 16th, 1915 and was severely wounded in the thigh on July 14th, 1916. Invalided home, but returned to France in February. Killed by a piece of shell during an attack. Has three brothers serving: Driver Sydney Burrows & Driver Samuel Burrows (both ASC in France) and Air Mechanic Jesses Burrows (RFC) in England. A fourth brother, Pte. Robert Henry Burrows was in France, but discharged for shell-shock.
