Family History

Sydney was born in Newark in 1897 the son of Edward and Mary Ann of 141 Thrumpton Lane, Retford, Edward and Mary were both from Newark. Their first four children were all born in Newark and it is only prior to the birth of their son Frederick in 1910 that the family appears to have moved to Retford. Edward was a steam boiler maker and then became a Gas engineer, plater . In the 1901 census the family were living at 12 Long Row, Newark. By the 1911 census the family had moved to Retford and are living at 141 Thrumpton Lane. Sydney is 14 years of age and has brothers Richard,Albert and Frederick and sister Lucy, living with him and his parents at the address

Military History

Sydney enlisted in Retford and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment) His medal index cards shows that he first entered a theatre of war in France on 18th August 1915, within less than two months of being at the front he was killed in action on 15th October 1915. He is buried in Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

An article in the Retford Times reads:- Pte Sidney Broughton Retford Times 12/11/15 Retford Territorial Killed In our issue of Oct 29th we stated that Pte Sidney Broughton , 8th Sherwood Foresters was unofficially reported killed. This news is unfortunately only too true, as the brave lads parents Mr and Mrs Broughton , George Street, Retford, received the official intimation on Sunday morning. Pte Broughton , who was only 19 years of age, fell on Oct 15th having been in France about eight weeks. He joined the territorials about two years ago , and served his apprenticeship at Messers W J Jenkins and Co. he passed two examinations at the Retford evening and technical classes , and had a promising future.
