Edward Broughton was born in 1899 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a boiler driller and Hannah Broughton née Barnard of 21 Tenter Buildings, Newark. His father Joseph was born in 1865 at Derby and his mother Hannah Barnard was born in 1866 at Newark, they were married in Newark in 1884 and went on to have the following children, Lucy b1886 Newark, Minnie b1887 Newark, Andrew b1887 Newark, William b1892 Langley Mill, Nellie b1894 Langley Mill, Richard b1896 Newark, Edward b1899 Newark, George b1902 Newark and Cyril b1905 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Tenter Buildings, Appleton Gate, Newark and are shown as Joseph 46 yrs a boiler driller, he is living with his wife Hannah 45 yrs and their children, Nellie 17 yrs a machinist, George 9 yrs a scholar and Cyril 6 yrs. In the same census Edward is living with his married sister Minnie Green and her husband Frank Green 24 yrs a brewers labourer and her children, at 28 Tenter Buildings, Newark, he is shown as Edward Broughton 12 yrs a scholar, also living with them is his elder brother Richard 15 yrs a ticket printer. He was one of 5 serving brothers during the Great War
Edward Broughton enlisted at Newark and served with the 2nd battalion Devonshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 24th April 1918 and is buried at St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, Somme, France.
Article published on 15th May 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr J. Broughton, 21 Tenter Buildings, Newark. Born at Langley Mill and educated at Lovers Lane council school. Attended St. Leonard’s sunday school and was a member of the church choir about five years. Also a drummer in the boy scouts. Worked at Warwick & Richardsons up to enlisting . Received calling-up papers on his 18th birthday and joined ASC on March 7th, 1917. Later transferred to 1st Devons. Has three brothers, Pte H. Broughton, Lincolns, in France. Pte. William Broughton, twice wounded, now at Clipstone Camp. Pte R.E. Broughton, Northumberland Fusiliers.
