Family History

Louis Branch was born in 1898 at Newark and was the son of the late William Herman Branch a glass and china dealer and Mary Jane Branch née Burden of 45-47 Castle Gate, Newark. His father William Herman was born in 1859 at Newark, he died in 1905 at Newark, he was 46 yrs of age, his mother was born in 1862 at Plungar, they were married in 1893 at Newark and had the following children, Arthur b1896, Louis b1898 and George E b1900 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census Louis has left the family home, he is residing at St Edwards Home (boys home) at Huntingdon, he is shown as being 13 yrs of age and a scholar. He later found employment with Lady Emily Dyke at Lullingstone Castle, Kent

Military History

Private Louis Branch enlisted at Dartford, Kent his residence was Newark, he initially served with the service number 6465 in the London Regiment. He was serving with the 23rd battalion Lancashire Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 27th September 1918 and is buried at Trois Arbres Cemetery Steenwerck Nord France

His brother Arthur Branch attested on 19th November 1915 at Newark, he was 19 yrs and 279 days old, his address was 45 Castle Gate Newark, he was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 4th July 1918 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was demobilised in January 1919 he saw no service overseas.
