Family History

Robert William Bradley was born in 1887 at Newark and was the son of Fred a general labourer and Sarah Jane Bradley née Hallam of Blytons Yard, Newark. His father Fred was born in 1865 at Farndon and his mother Sarah Jane Hallam was born in 1863 at Coddington, they were married in 1885 at Newark and went on to have 12 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Robert William b1887 Newark, John Fred b1890 Coddington, Ethel Emily b1893 Newark, Elizabeth b1896 Newark, Gertrude b1897 Newark, Joseph b1898 Newark, Alice b1905 Newark, May b1908 Newark and Lillian Maud b1910 Newark. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 1 Gordons Row, Newark and are shown as Fred 46 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 48 yrs and their children, Joseph 13 yrs a scholar, Alice 6 yrs, May 3 yrs and Lillian Maud 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census we find that Robert William has moved out of the family home, he is living at 5 Smiths Row, Water Lane, Newark, he is shown as a boarder 24 yrs single and a brewers labourer, he is living with Charles Fletcher 41 yrs a farm labourer and his family. Robert William married his wife Annie Townrow in 1915 at Newark, they went on to have a son Robert William born in 1915 at Newark, they lived at Smiths Row, Water Lane, Newark.

Military History

Private Robert William Bradley enlisted at Newark and served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th November 1918 and is buried at Sebourg British Cemetery, France.

Article published 27th November 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Lived with his wife and two children at 5 Smiths Row, Newark. Worked for Mr Lawrence in Sleaford Road, before enlisting in 1915. Went through Irish rebellion, before going to France on 28th Feb. 1917. Slightly wounded on 26th Sept. 1917 and last home on leave Aug. 1918. Eldest son of Mr. F. Bradley, 65, William Street. Has two brothers serving in France and four brothers-in-law. One of whom has had a leg amputated.
