George Willmott was born in 1895 at Selston and was the son of George a coal miner and Annie Willmott née Walker of Westwood His father George was born in 1873 at Greasley and his mother Annie Walker was born in 1871 also at Greasely they were married in 1895, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, George b1896, Winifred b1898, Wilfred b1899, Annie b1902, William b1904, Ellen b1906, Claude b1909 and Norah b1910, all were born at Westwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Westwood village near Selston and are shown as George 38 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Annie 40 yrs and their children George 15 yrs a colliery driver underground, Winifred 13 yrs a scholar, Wilfred 11 yrs a scholar, Annie 9 yrs a scholar, Lillian 7 yrs a scholar, Ellen 5 yrs, Claude 2 yrs and Norah 5 months old.
George attested on 11th December 1915 at Eastwood for the duration of the war and was sent to the reserves the next day. He gave his age as 19 years and 9 months and his address as New Westwood Jacksdale. He was single and a coal miner and had been born at Selston. On 13th April 1918, aged 22 years and 28 days, he was medically examined at Mansfield and found to be fit. He was mobilised on 23rd April 1918 and went to the Western front with his battalion. On 15th October he was killed in action. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial. He had served in the army for 2 years and 282 days.
George's younger brother Wilfred also served during the Great War and died on 15th December 1919.
