Family History

Thomas Humphrey Swann was born in 1898 at Farndon and was the son of Thomas a wool merchant and Mary Swann née Humphrey of The Crown Inn, Rolleston. His father Thomas was born in 1863 at Farndon and his mother Mary Pizer Humphrey was born in 1874 at Pleasley, they were married on 26th December 1894 at Pleasley and went on to have 7 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were Thomas b1898, Frank b1901, Fred b1905 and Percy b1909, all were born in Farndon. In the 1911 census the family were living at Farndon Road, Newark and are shown as Thomas 48 yrs a wool merchant he is living with his wife Mary 37 yrs and their children, Thomas 13 yrs a scholar, Frank 10 yrs a scholar, Fred 6 yrs of age , also living with them is Elizabeth Humphrey 77 yrs a widow aged 77 yrs and listed as a visitor.

Military History

Lance Corporal Thomas Humphrey enlisted at Newark, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 29th September 1918 he is buried at Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
