Family History

John William Bentley was born in 1896 at Woodborough and he was the son of Robert a farmer and Alice Mary Bentley née Lockton of Manor Farm Thurgaton Nottinghamshire. His father Robert was born in 1859 in Wilford and his mother Alice Mary Lockton was born in Hulme Manchester in 1862, they were married in 1884 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, they went on to have 5 children , Ernest b1888 Wilford, Robert Phillip b1890 Woodborough, Alice Mary b1892 Woodborough, John William b1896 Woodborough, Arthur Thomas b1903 Thurgarton. In the 1911 census the family are living on Manor Farm, Thurgarton and are shown as Robert 52 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Alice Mary 49 yrs and their children Ernest 23 yrs a farmers son, Robert Phillip 21 yrs a farmers son, Alice Mary 19 yrs a farmers daughter, John William 15 yrs a farmers son and Arthur Thomas 8 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Rifleman John William Bentley, enlisted at Nottingham on 13th March 1915, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 2 months, his address as Manor Farm, Thurgarton, his occupation was that of a farm labourer, his next of kin was his father Robert of the same address . On 17th March 1915 he arrived at Winchester barracks and was posted to the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. Following his training he landed in France on 24th August 1915 and was killed in action on 13th February 1916. He was buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Death notice published 26th February 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BENTLEY. – Killed in action, February 13th, in the trenches at Hooge, Rifleman John William Bentley, 3rd Batt. Rifle Brigade, the third dearly loved son of Robert and Alice Mary Bently, Manor Farm, Thurgarton, aged 20 years.
