Family History

Charles Thomas Bentley was born on 2nd August 1884 at Burton Coggles and was baptised on 17th July 1887 at Burton Coggles and was the son of Robert William an agricultural labourer and Sarah Ann Bentley née Pick. His father Robert William known as William was born in 1852 at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, his mother was Sarah Ann Pick born 1851 at Woolsthorpe, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham registration district, Sarah Ann brought a child Lois Pick born 1878 Woolsthopre to the marriage, they went on to have the following children, Emma b1882 Woolsthorpe, Charles Thomas b1884 Burton Coggles, Albert William b1888 Burton Coggles and John Edward b1890 Woolsthorpe. In the 1911 census we find Charles Thomas has left the family home and is a boarder, he is liivng at High Street, Bottesford and is a labourer on a farm, he is living with Mary Sentance 56 yrs a widow and house keeper and her children. Charles Thomas Bentley married Lottie Ann Hammond (born 23rd October 1882 ) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham registration district, they lived at 63 Ragland Street, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Charles Thomas Bentley enlisted at Nottingham whilst living in Hucknall, he served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 7th January 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra War Memorial, panel 12.
