He was born at The Priory, Mansfield Woodhouse. He was the son of William A. Hodges, JP and Augusta Hodges of 'Oaklands', Bromley Park, Kent (CWGC).
3rd Bn. Monmouthshire Regiment, attached 11th Bn. South Lancashire. Twice mentioned in Despatches. He was reported missing believed killed on 24 March 1918 but his death was not confirmed until the following October. He is buried in Roye New British Cemetery (grave ref III.E.1). 'On the night of 22 March 1918, he entered a small factory on a road between Ham and Eppeville, hoping to make contact with a British battalion. He instead encountered enemy troops and was shot dead.'

He was 32 years of age and a son of Mrs and Mrs WA Hodges of The Hill, East Bridgford.'Family memorial, East Bridgford parish church (WMA 18336): 'To the Glory of God this window is dedicated by his devoted parents, sister and brothers to the beloved memory of Harold Augustus Hodges Capt. 3rd Monmouths who, near St Quentin on 24 March 1918, gave his life in the Great War for King and Country. Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.'
