John 'known as Jack' was born in 1890 at Eastwood and was the son of James 'known as Jack' a coal miner and Sarah Ann Hemstock née Draper of Lynncroft Eastwood. His father Jack was born in 1862 at Moorgreen, his mother Sarah Ann Draper was born in 1866 at Heanor, they were married in 1889 their marriage recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born at Greasley were John b1890, Ada b1891, William b1897, Scott b1902, Kenneth b1907 and Alice b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lynn Croft Eastwood and are shown as James 48 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 44 yrs and their children, Jack 21 yrs a mineral water carrier, Ada 20 yrs no occupation listed, William 14 yrs a coal miner below ground, Scott 9 yrs a scholar, Kenneth 4 yrs and Alice 2 yrs of age.
Rifleman John Hemstock enlisted at Nottingham on 10th September 1914, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 154 days, his occupation was that of a coal miner and lived at Beauvale, Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire his next of kin was his father James of the same address. He was posted to the 13th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 30th July 1915. He was killed in action on 19th July 1916 during the battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
