Family History

Charles Edwin was the eldest son of Edwin and Fanny (Fannie) Gabbitas nee Turton. His father, Edwin Gabbitas, was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Gabbitas and born in Newark in 1866 (A/M/J Newark, mother's maiden name Baines). His mother, Fanny Turton, was the daughter of Frederick Wiliam and Elizabeth Turton, and born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire; birth registered 1865 (J/F/M Bromsgrove Worcs). In 1881 Fanny was living with her parents in Bromsgrove but by 1891 at the age of 26 she was working as a laundress at Newark Hospital, Bedlam Row, Newark. Edwin and Fanny were married on 22 September 1892 (J/A/S Newark) at St Leonard's parish church, Newark, and had two children: Charles Edwin b. 1893 (J/A/S Newark) and Frederick William b. 13 March 1898 (A/M/J Newark). In 1901 Edwin (35), a bricklayer's labourer, and Fanny (36) were living at Northern Buildings, 7 Lovers Lane, Newark, with their two sons, Charles (7) and Frederick (3). Also in the household was a lodger, Charles Moode (29 b. Southwell), a malster. By 1911 the family was living at Little Carlton, South Muskham. Edwin was still working as a bricklayer's labourer and his son Charles (17) was a bricklayer's apprentice. Charles' father Edwin Gabbetas died aged 48 in 1915 (O/N/D Southwell) and his mother Fanny died aged 66 on 1 January 1932. Charles married Jessie Hitchin in 1915 (O/N/D Newark) and they had a son, Charles Edwin, in 1916 (J/A/S Coventry Warwickshire); Charles had joined the Coventry Police in 1915 so presumably Jessie had moved there after their marriage. However, the CWGC record gives Jessie's address as 3 Century Street, Newark, suggesting that she lived in Coventry for only a short period. Jessie married Raymond V Reynolds (b. 17 June 1896) in 1923 (O/N/D Newark) and they had a son, Geoffrey, b. 9 February 1925 (J/F/M Newark, Gabbitas). In 1939 Raymond, a ball bearing grinding machine operator, Jessie and their son Geoffrey, were living at 44 Halton Gardens, Hatton Gardens, Newark. Jessie's son, Charles Edwin Gabbitas, has not yet been traced after 1916. Charles' brother Frederick William married Margaret E Riley (b. 24 March 1896) in 1923 (O/N/D Newark). In 1939 they were living at 82 Albert Street, Newark; Frederick was an engineer's fitter while Margaret's occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties'. Also in the household was the widowed Harriett E Riley (b. 13 April 1859) who was described as 'incapacitated'; it is likely she was Margaret's mother. Frederick William died on 3 March 1983 (J/F/M Newark). Probate: Gabbitas Frederick William of Belton House 82 Albert St Newark on Trent Notts died 3 March 1983 Probate Manchester 12 July £25921.

Military History

Charles enlisted shortly before Christmas 1915 and was serving in France by July the following year. He was wounded by shell fire at a base camp and evacuated to England where he was admitted to the Princess Christian Military Hospital, Englefield Green, Surrey. He died there on 26 August 1916 (J/A/S Windsor Berkshire) and was buried in South Muskham (St Wilfrid) churchyard, (near north-west angle of the church tower and in front of the family grave). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
