Family History

Charles Thomas Tomlinson was born in 1891 at Brigg and was baptised on 23rd December 1891 at Brigg and was the son of Charles a railway porter and Emma Tomlinson née Wood of 122 Cross Street, Lincoln. His father Charles was born in 1870 at Wrawby, Lincs, and his mother Emma Wood was born in 1867 at Weighington, Lincs, they were married in 1891 at Brigg and went on to have 8 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Charles Thomas b1891 Brigg, Norah b1902 Brigg, Albert b1908 Brigg and Ralph b1912 Lincoln. In the 1911 census the family are living at 122 Cross Street, Lincoln and are shown as Charles 41 yrs a railway porter he is living with his wife Emma 44 yrs and their children Charles Thomas 19 yrs a shop assistant, Norah 8 yrs a scholar and Albert 3 yrs of age. His parents emigrated to New Zealand, they left London on the ship 'Beltana' leaving London on 29th November 1912, they took with them their three children, Norah, Albert and Ralph. Charles Thomas married his wife Violet Hoe, of Fleet Street Collingham Newark in 1912 at Newark they went on to have 2 children, Ethel and James Tomlinson they lived at 13 Carter Gate, Newark

Military History

Private Charles Thomas Tomlinson enlisted at Newark, he initially served with the service number 6358 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 11th April 1918 whilst serving with the 1/5th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment and is buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France.

Article published 12th June 1918 and 9th April 1919 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Charles & Emma Tomlinson of Palmerston, South, New Zealand. Husband of Violet Tomlinson (nee Hoe), 13 Cartergate, Newark. Previous to enlisting was the manager for Messrs. Halford’s Cycle Co., Cartergate. He went to France in September 1916 and was reported wounded and missing at Steenwerke, Belgium on 11th April 1918. Presumed dead in April 1919.
