Albert was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the eldest son of Albert a deputy in a coal mine and Annie Cluroe née Metherington. His father father Albert was born in1870 in Nottingham and his mother Annie Metherington was born in 1873 also in Nottingham, they married in 1890 the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 7 children however 1 of which Nellie was to die infancy prior to 1911. Their children were : - Albert born 1892, Ada b1895, William b1900, Annie b1905, Arthur b1907 and John b1911, all their children were born in Nottingham. In 1901 census the family lived at 1 Soudan Terrace Hawthorn Street Meadows Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Briar Street, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as: Albert 41 yrs head of the family and a deputy in a coal mine , he is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their children Albert 19 yrs a coal miner , Ada a jatten girl in the lace industry, William 11 yrs, Annie 6 yrs, Arthur 4 yrs and John 2 months of age. Albert and Annie later lived at 228 Wilford Road Meadows Nottingham.
Albert enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he went out to France to join the British Expeditionary Force on 13th September 1915, his battalion then moved onto Egypt in October 1915 and then to Salonika. He was wounded in action and taken to the 85th Field Ambulance in Greece where he died of his wounds on 31st October 1916. He is buried in Struma Military Cemetery in Greece
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th November 1916 : - “CLUROE. – Killed in action, October 31st, Signaller Albert Cluroe, Northumberland Fusiliers. He gave his life for one and all. Never will he be forgotten. – Sorrowing grandfather, uncle, and aunts.” Obituary published Nottingham Evening Post dated 31st October 1917 “CLUROE. – In loving memory of Private A. Cluroe,signaller, Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 25 years, died of wounds received in action October 31st, 1916. Far away from those who loved him, comrades laid him down to rest; noble her, true and brave, peacefully sleeps in a soldier's grave. Reunited with his sister Nellie, died October 28th, 1904, aged 8 years. – Sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brothers. “CLUROE. – In loving memory of Private A. Cluroe, signaller, Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds October 31st, 1916. Far and oft my thoughts do wander to that grave so far away, where they laid my dearest brother just one year ago to-day. – Sister Ada. “CLUROE. – In loving memory of Private A.
